Pacific Gas and Electric Adds 105 MW More Renewable Energy
Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has secured an additional 105 megawatts (MW) of clean, reliable renewable energy resources to help meet the future electricity needs of nearly 80,000 PG&E customers. The company submitted three long-term power purchase agreements (PPA) to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for regulatory review.
Stop the fossil foolishness
Kelpie Wilson, truthout. Gas prices are on the rise again and news analysts are kicking it around, wondering who is being ripped off this time. But ...unlike other gas shortages, this one is the real thing, or at least the beginning of the real thing: production has peaked and the era of cheap oil is about to end. [Analysis of political responses to rising gas prices.]
Distributed Energy Utilities - It's All About Financing
Many small-scale renewable energy systems have pay-back times of ten years or less. Putting a solar hot water system on your rooftop should be a no-brainer in most geographic zones. So why don't more people invest in distributed energy? The answer: the lack of attractive financing options is the main reason why they are not yet mainstream, not the capital cost of renewable energy systems. The new concept of "distributed energy utilities" can overcome this hurdle, as several examples from...

Progress in production of hydrogen by microbial fuel cells
Press Release, Penn State University (US). Penn State environmental engineers and a scientist at Ion Power Inc. have developed an electrically assisted process that enables bacteria to coax four times as much hydrogen directly out of biomass than can be generated typically by fermentation alone.
Victorian Renewable Energy Target Shows Promise Down Under
Under the Victorian Government's proposed Renewable Energy Target scheme, more than one fifth of Victorian homes could be supplied with zero- emission electricity at less than $1 per month, according to a new report. The scheme would create jobs, inject money into the national economy and prepare the Victorian economy for a carbon-constrained world.
Senate Democrats Introduce Broad Energy Package
While immigration and border security is the big issue this week in Congress, Senate Democrats haven't forgotten about the high energy prices being felt by industry and gas stations all across the country. On Wednesday, they unveiled a broad package of energy legislation that includes a number of provisions aimed at increasing renewable energy use and reducing America's use of petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.
Amory Lovins Misleads with Numbers
Arthur Smith, Alternative Energy Action Network. A review of Amory Lovins, "More Profit with Less Carbon". In short, Lovins throws a lot of numbers around, but far too many of the ones he provides are irrelevant, meaningless, or misleading. The road ahead is much more difficult than he portrays.

Municipal Mortgage & Equity (MuniMae), a player in the real estate and financial services markets, moved into the renewable energy markets by acquiring Renewable Ventures LLC, a third-party financer and operator of renewable energy generation facilities.
Fuel Cells - A Perspective
Tom Biegler, ATSE Focus. With their promise of environmentally benign power, fuel cells are widely promoted as the electricity generators of the future. Technological advances over several decades have demonstrated that they can certainly be made to work but their central claim of exceptionally high efficiency does not always stand up to scientific scrutiny. Expectations that fuel cells will be simple and cheap seem unrealistic.
Hydrogen fuel cells hint at hope, hurdles
Roger Mezger, Cleveland Plain Dealer. Some think hydrogen will soon emerge as a force in the economy, just as oil did 100 years ago....Others are more skeptical.
